Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... For Now.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will the creator Know the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, why mess with the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
