US Military Executes Lethal Attack in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths
According to a senior military official, the US military executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The government has encountered growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
