The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An new acronym came to light a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, as stated by medical experts including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to care for a minor who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities rejects these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
