The English Team to Begin the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The English squad will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the relatively straightforward passage for a competition hosted across the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The English side are planned to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, should they win the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean starting the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Opening and Demonstration
The tournament was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Key representatives from Uefa and the host football associations were heckled as they entered the location by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.
Signs were held up with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Schedule
The first match of Euro 2028 will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5pm.
It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from next season, will cater to households and help connect with a broader range of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are set to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that do not reach the tournament through the qualification path.
Locations and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a championship for the fans and a showcase of everything we cherish about the sport – its emotion and capacity to foster unity.”
Over 3 million tickets, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be released to attendees.
