Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these medications should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
