No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
