Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
