Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
