No major competition markets equal footing like the NFL: it’s the entire brand. Yet following the first ten matchups in this campaign, this isn’t a league with perfect equilibrium between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Instead, it's a scenario where most of the league are merely adequate.

NFC Clarity

Looking at the NFC side, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. Los Angeles and Seattle (each holding 7-2 records) look like the most complete teams across the league, and delivered overwhelming triumphs on Sunday. The Eagles with six wins even with their challenges maintain a deeply skilled squad throughout football, comparable to Green Bay (5-2-1 record). The Lions also (6-3 standing), with their fluctuating form in trench play while managing internal staff conflicts, have proven they can hammer quality opponents. For all five, one can readily put together a championship trajectory.

AFC Confusion

Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape is thoroughly confusing. The current division frontrunners after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) and Steelers (5-4). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. Not the Bills. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The usual contenders, featuring premier quarterback talent, possess either obvious team deficiencies or have suffered medical setbacks.

In some ways, it’s the league’s ideal. Yet observing this season's top AFC teams in the AFC still feels strange. Aspects of each franchise meet championship standards, but not in their entirety. Had it not been for fumbling away a manageable matchup against Pittsburgh, they'd possess at 9–1 with the top standing. In the prior year, they were old and slow. Today they appear young, fast and unafraid. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've played against the easiest slate across the NFL, and flaws have still emerged. The signal-caller has taken sacks 35 times – the second-most in football – and some of the shots he absorbed on Sunday were vicious. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Denver Analysis

Denver stands at also 8-2, and the perception remains that they're barely surviving. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, with the defense doing most of the responsibility. Absent adequate signal-calling, the Broncos won't frighten anyone in the postseason. Los Angeles remains nearby in the AFC West with seven wins, but the injuries along their offensive line will present challenges for extended playoff success.

Steelers Examination

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, inexplicably frontrunning the AFC North despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles on Sunday night. They have a negative point differential, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints at this stage of his career continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, yet Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and the schedule softening, are on a three-game win streak. We shouldn't be completely astonished that the Ravens have pulled the gap to just one game, though the speed of this shift highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. Considering the Ravens opened the season 1-5 yet still appear likely to claim the title reveals much about the complete conference.

Historical Favorites

Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who could still create the highest anxiety for opponents if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo continue to self-destruct.
