We are checking images and video shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
